AI is making communication more important, according to a new study quoted by the World Economic Forum.
“The more technology mediates our day-to-day communication; the more people value genuine interactions with other humans. While communication skills have always been important to employers, the types of skills that are valued will change. In my study, 72% of frequent AI users reported that oral communication will become more important…” says study author Professor Peter Cardon.
In essence, as technology supports us more and more and the need for many roles is removed, the main value add from people in business will be soft skills.
His conclusion that the integration of AI will demand that workplaces become even more human-centred is one shared by The Amber Group. We specialise in communication training and it’s the reason we have created AmberGo, an elearning platform designed to provide people with the skills they need to be more Conscious Communicators.
The fundamentals of Conscious Communication
Unconscious Communicators are unaware of their style and use their same instinctive techniques to communicate in every situation, from chatting with colleagues to speaking with customers or presenting to teams in a meeting.
Conscious Communicators understand that effective communication is made up of 3 key elements:
· Our body language
· Our vocal delivery
· The words we say
Although most Unconscious Communicators only ever concentrate on the words they say, Conscious Communicators are aware that all three elements are equally important in creating a positive impact. And being able to adapt your style to match those you are speaking with is key to getting the best from people.
Communicators required from top to bottom
Businesses that train their graduates and new entrants in foundational communication skills from the outset will gain a competitive advantage. It starts with active listening, clear questioning techniques and the ability to communicate clearly.
Managers that can more effectively communicate with and manage their teams will increase productivity and build loyalty. It requires investment in skills such as providing constructive feedback and continuous coaching.
Leaders that can communicate strategy clearly will galvanise their teams behind the important goals and set a culture that others will want to join and drive to be successful. It requires the ability to adapt communication styles to get the best from every personality type in their organisations.
